The healing power of sleep

Vail Health Foundation discusses how the Oxehealth platform allows for better rest and improved patient outcomes

A good night's sleep is essential to mental and physical health. However, in many inpatient facilities, patients face frequent sleep interruptions as staff must conduct safety checks every 15 minutes through the night. These routine sleep disturbances can lead to poor patient outcomes, increased aggression, and difficulty engaging in therapy and treatment plans.

The Precourt Healing Center at the Edwards Community Health Campus has introduced Oxehealth's platform to address these challenges. This contact-free patient monitoring system limits sleep disturbances caused by manual checks. It allows for better sleep among patients and provides staff with the tools to monitor their safety, health, and well-being efficiently.

Balancing care with privacy

Nearly every mental health disorder affects sleep, and monitoring sleep-wake cycles can provide vital clues about a patient's condition. Oxehealth's platform monitors sleep patterns, vital signs, and activity levels without intrusive physical contact.

Infrared cameras installed in every patient room allow staff to conduct 15-second visual checks on touchscreens as needed. Secure login requirements and automatic timeouts ensure patient privacy and dignity. The system reduces the need for sleep medications, which can be addictive. By allowing staff to analyze sleep patterns better and identify potentially risky activity, the platform facilitates early intervention, improving patient safety and therapeutic outcomes.

In addition, it integrates with Electronic Health Records (EHR) to document observations and other critical data, reducing administrative workloads and increasing staff productivity. Facilities using Oxehealth's platform have reported significant improvements in patient safety and outcomes, including a 44% reduction in patient room self-harm incidents, a 52% reduction in ligature-related events in patient rooms, and a 68% reduction in bathroom ligatures.

Patients at facilities using the technology report feeling safer, experiencing fewer disturbances at night, enjoying better sleep, and feeling a greater sense of privacy and overall well-being

"Oxehealth's platform represents a significant step forward in behavioral health care, and we are excited to be at the forefront in using this technology," says Dr. Ben Carron, Psychiatrist at the Precourt Healing Center. "It enables us to deliver safe, high-quality care while creating a more dignified patient experience.”
